"Meg and Jack White -- who released six studio albums, the last of which was 2007's 'Icky Thump' -- announced the end via a statement on their website.
"The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health," the statement reads. "It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band have it stay that way."
"The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on any of us and we are truly grateful."
The duo -- formerly husband and wife -- formed in Detroit, Mich. in 1997, with mainstream success beckoning after their third album, 2001's 'White Blood Cells.' In recent years, White has branched out, forming the Raconteurs and Dead Weather, all the while running Third Man Records and producing artists like Loretta Lynn, Dungen and Wanda Jackson. "

i loved this band. sucks to know that amazing music is coming to an end. i wish them the best though, whether or not they do solo projects or whatever.
