This is a list of the 10 best romantic movies of all time. We've compiled some classic films that feature romances which will remain eternal with contemporary titles that make our heart beat just as fast. And no, this list does not have "Titanic".
1. "Casablanca" (1942) Directed by Michael Curtiz. Starring Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman. We put this at number one because sometimes romance doesn't mean having a "happily ever after." Sometimes it means having a bittersweet ending where love means sacrifice.
2. "Gone With The Wind" (1939) Directed by Victor Fleming. Starring Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, Leslie Howard. At the center of this American Civil War epic is the love triangle between Rhett Butler (Gable), Scarlett O'Hara (Leigh) and Ashley Wilkes (Howard). With the film chalk full of symbolism toward the Civil War, nothing is better than the romance between Rhett and Scarlett who work as two magnets trying to pull away from each other.
3. "The Clock" (1945) Directed by Vincente Minnelli. Starring Judy Garland, Robert Walker. When soldier Joe Allen (Walker) has a two-day leave, he meets Alice Mayberry (Garland) and is smitten with her at first sight. During their dinner date, they fall in love and spontaneously decide to get married before Joe has to return to war. This classic romantic film is always ignored by other movie lists but it will not be ignored here.
4. "Miracle In The Rain" (1943) – Directed by Rudolph Mate. Starring Van Johnson, Jane Wyman. The film is about a lonely soldier Art (Johnson) and a lonely woman Ruth (Wyman) meeting in the rain on a New York city corner. This story is romance in its simplicity. Prepare to cry.
5. "The Princess Bride" (1987) Directed by Rob Reiner. Starring Cary Elwes, Robin Wright Penn. We do not know who doesn't like this film or who hasn't seen it. And of course, this film has us girls sigh at those three little words – "As you wish".
6. "Ghost" (1990) Directed by Jerry Zucker. Starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg. A paranormal-romance in which a murdered man (Swayze) must protect the woman (Moore) he loves through the help of a psychic (Goldberg) with one of the most heart-wrenching, tear-jerk endings of all time.
7. "It Happened One Night" (1934) Directed by Frank Capra. Starring Clark Gable & Claudette Colbert. When Ellie Andrews (Colbert), the rebellious daughter of a newspaper tycoon, runs away and boards a bus, she meets reporter Peter Warne (Gable). She agrees to give him an exclusive story once they reach New York as long as he doesn't tell her father where she is. But along the way he ends up teaching her about life and they fall in love.
8. "Roman Holiday" (1953) Directed by William Wyler. Starring Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn. When sheltered Princess Ann (Hepburn) escapes her royal duties to tour the city of Rome by herself, she meets a reporter, Joe Bradley (Peck) who ends up traveling with her around the city. But will the love that grows between them be broken when Ann finds out that Joe is a reporter?
9. "The Ghost & Mrs. Muir" (1947) Directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz. Starring Gene Tierney, Rex Harrison. When Lucy Muir (Tierney) buys a house by the English seaside, she finds out it is haunted by the previous owner Captain Daniel Gregg (Harrison). When Lucy stubbornly refuses to move out, who will believe that Lucy has fallen in love with a ghost? Or that a ghost might be in love with her?
10. "Pride and Prejudice" (2005) Directed by Joe Wright. Starring Keira Knightley, Matthew MacFadyen. This adaptation seduces us with its luscious cinematography and the chemistry between Knightley and MacFadyen as Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy.
